Content policy

Rolegend narrates dark fantasy for adults without restraint on violence. Romance fades to black unless every player at the table opts in to explicit scenes.

1. How we think about it

Rolegend is a place to play stories: adventure, horror, intrigue, romance and everything between. We want it to feel like the fiction shelves of a good bookstore, with room for many kinds of story, including stories written for adults. You must be 18 or over to use this service. Requesting a sign-in link requires you to confirm it, and we ask again every time you sign in.

We have two aims:

Room for the story. Dark themes, hard subjects and explicit scenes can all belong in a Rolegend story, inside the limits on this page.
You choose what you meet. Every table starts at fade to black. Explicit scenes are only for adults who turn them on.

What you play in private follows different rules from what anyone can read. Your turns are private, and only the checks in section 3 and the rules in section 7 apply to them. Anything that can be read in public, including through a link, must also meet section 6.

2. Where each rule applies

Your play. The turns between you, the friends at your table and the Game Master. Sections 3 and 7 apply.
The campaigns and worlds we publish. Only our team publishes a campaign or a world. Each one meets sections 4 to 8 before it is listed.
Chronicles. A run that you choose to publish as a chronicle can be read by anyone with its link, so it must meet sections 6 to 8.

No picture on Rolegend shows nudity or sexual content, anywhere.

3. Your play

Your sessions are private. An automatic check reads every turn before the Game Master answers it, and it blocks one thing everywhere on Rolegend: sexual content that involves a minor or a character who reads as a minor.

Past that check and the rules in section 7, we do not filter or steer what the Game Master writes in your sessions, inside the heat that your table chose. The rules for public content in section 6 do not apply to your private turns.

Models. The models behind ROWAN apply their own usage policies, and some refuse topics that this policy allows. When one declines mid-scene, Rolegend says so plainly and hands the scene back to you. The Game Master does not break character to deliver it, and you never see a raw error. We count how often that happens.
Real distress. Rolegend is a game, not a crisis service. When a message reads as real distress rather than the story, we show crisis resources in place of the next reply. We record that this happened, not what you wrote.
Privacy. Our team does not read your turns. We look at a turn only when you report it or ask us to help with that turn, and only to deal with that request.

4. Heat

Heat says what a table can hold. It sets what a session may contain, not what every session will contain.

Fade to black, the default. A story can hold sex, violence and every other adult theme, but sex stays off the page. Attraction, flirting, kissing and the fact that two characters slept together are all part of the story. The scene cuts before sex is described, and the next reply picks up after it.
Explicit. Everything above, and sex described as it happens. An adult turns it on in their settings. At a shared table, every player must turn it on, or the table stays at fade to black.

A campaign states the most heat it allows, and its card says so. Rules that directly govern sex make a campaign explicit, even when they are optional or a small part of the game.

Violence is the same at every heat. Graphic violence and its aftermath, horror and body-horror, torture, cruelty, moral blackness, trauma, addiction and the on-screen death of sympathetic characters are all in scope. A dark fantasy game where the GM flinches is not a dark fantasy game.

Heat is a setting, not a way around the rest of this page. Some things no setting allows (section 7).

5. Romance, sex and the bookstore standard

The bookstore standard covers romance too, and that includes romances with explicit sex scenes. Sex can come up often, matter to the story, or be part of why you play it. A romance does not need a separate adventure plot to earn its sex scenes, and a scene is not out of bounds just because it is arousing.

The line runs between a story that has sex in it and content that exists mainly to produce sex scenes. A story can center on desire, intimacy and sexual relationships, but the characters, their relationships and your choices must matter for more than which scene comes next.

Rules that directly govern sex, such as actions, stats, resources or progress tied to it, are allowed when they are not most of the game and do not glorify sexual violence or incest. A tracker for trust, affection or a relationship is not a sexual rule.

This holds for a single character, place or set of instructions as much as for a whole campaign. We look at what a piece of content adds to play and what it tells the Game Master to do. We do not judge prose style, ask for a moral or grade literary quality.

Fade to black: a romance between two rival duellists, with real attraction and a relationship that grows, and the sex kept off the page.
Explicit: the same romance with the sex described, next to their ambitions, their quarrels and the way the relationship changes.
Not something we publish: a list of characters who are there to be available, with instructions to deliver one encounter after another and little else that matters.

6. What cannot be made public

Content built for sex scenes alone

We do not publish content that exists mainly to produce sex scenes for gratification, where the characters, the story and the game are mostly an excuse. Signs of it:

Characters described mostly by their sexual traits, their availability or what they will do.
Instructions that push every scene toward sex, whatever the players choose or the situation is.
Progress that mostly unlocks encounters, with little else.
Encounters that repeat without changing the characters, their relationships or their situation.
A title or a description that sells it chiefly as a way to get sex scenes.

These are signs, not automatic verdicts. Explicit language, frequent sex scenes or a focus on romance does not cross the line on its own.

Other purposes we do not publish

Content made mainly to shock or disgust, to glorify a real atrocity or the people who did it, or to promote hatred or harassment of people for a protected trait.
Content that glorifies or encourages suicide. A story can deal with suicide, suicidal thoughts, grief and recovery, as long as it does not celebrate suicide or push anyone to act on those thoughts.

A story can show cruelty, prejudice, atrocities and characters who approve of them. We tell that apart from content that itself encourages or celebrates that conduct.

7. What no setting allows

These rules apply everywhere on Rolegend: in your private play, in what we publish and in every chronicle. Heat does not change them, and a fictional frame does not excuse them.

Zero tolerance

Any of these closes the account at once and for good, with no appeal and no refund. We keep what is needed and report it to the authorities where the law asks us to.

Sexual content that involves a minor or a character who reads as a minor, real or fictional. Calling such a character an adult, or giving them an "aged-up" backstory such as a centuries-old being in a child's body, does not change that.
Sexual content that involves animals.
Threats against real people, instructions for real violence, and content that supports terrorism.
Content that promotes hatred of, or violence against, real people for a protected trait.

Also not allowed

These lead to removal of the content and can lead to action on the account, up to closing it.

Sexual content that involves a real, identifiable person.
Sexual violence or incest presented for gratification, including as a reward or a goal of play. A story can treat them as events or themes, but the story never makes it acceptable to eroticise them.
Harassing, threatening or doxxing a real person.
A character based on an identifiable real person, unless that person has clearly agreed.
Sharing a real person's personal details without consent.
Using play to get real instructions for weapons, explosives, drugs or a serious crime. A fictional frame does not make practical guidance for real harm acceptable.
Content that glorifies, encourages or gives instructions for suicide or self-harm.
Trying to get around our safety checks, for example through a fictional frame or by rewording a request again and again. The attempt breaks this policy whether or not it works.
Spam, scams and selling through play.
Content that breaks someone else's copyright, privacy or other legal rights, or that breaks the law.

8. Images

Explicit text and explicit pictures follow different rules. No picture on Rolegend shows nudity or sexual content, at any heat, and an explicit scene is never illustrated or read aloud. Every image goes through an automatic content check before anyone sees it.

9. How we check, and what we do

Automatic checks read our campaigns and every chronicle against this page. Our team can also review content by hand, and we make the final call on its heat and on whether it can be public.

Unpublished. A chronicle that breaks sections 6 to 8 goes back to private. It stays in your account, and the link stops working.
Repeated breaches. An account that breaks this policy again and again can lose the ability to publish chronicles.

A chronicle of a run with explicit scenes turned on cannot be published.

10. Your brakes

Rewind. Each GM reply of the open session carries a rewind control. It removes that reply, the action behind it and every turn after it, so the scene never happened and you can take it somewhere else.
Say it in the scene. ROWAN reads what you write. Telling the Game Master to move past something, or to keep it off the page, steers the next reply the same way any other instruction does.
Turn it off. Any player can turn explicit scenes off at any time, and the table goes back to fade to black from the next reply.

11. Copyright

If a chronicle or anything else on Rolegend uses your copyrighted work without permission, write to us at the address below with the work and where it appears. We check each request against copyright law, and we take down what infringes. An account with repeated valid claims against it can lose the ability to publish.
