Rolegend and MacerAI

MacerAI covers more kinds of table, including a human Dungeon Master with AI tools, and adds music that follows the scene. Rolegend puts its effort into play with an AI Game Master: a game engine built apart from the AI, a Virtual Tabletop, and a table for you and your friends.

Vaelantir: the timbered inn and walled gate of Karth's Hold on a rocky bluff, torches lit at dusk, with travelers and pack mules at the door. To the left, ivied imperial ruins rise from a misted valley, and a dragon crosses an overcast sky.

What MacerAI is

MacerAI is a browser-based tabletop roleplaying platform with two modes: an AI Dungeon Master that runs adventures for one player or a party, and a copilot toolkit for a human Dungeon Master. It plays by 5e-compatible rules from the System Reference Document 5.1 and sells monthly credit plans with a free tier.

What we could verify

  • Their homepage describes two game modes: AI DM adventures, played alone or with friends, and DM Copilot campaigns, in which a human Dungeon Master stays in charge with AI tools. (source, checked )
  • Their FAQ says it uses the System Reference Document 5.1 under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, so it plays with D&D 5e-compatible rules, and that it is independent of Dungeons & Dragons. (source, checked )
  • Friends join an AI DM adventure free through an invite link. Each player posts an action and marks ready, the host then lets the AI DM continue, and the host's credits pay for the party's story turns. (source, checked )
  • The free Adventurer plan gives 30 credits a month and 2 campaigns. The Dungeon Master plan is $9.95 a month for 600 credits and 3 campaigns, and the Hero plan is $14.95 a month for 1,500 credits and unlimited campaigns. (source, checked )
  • Credits pay for each AI DM story turn, scene image and voice narration, and images and narration cost more than a story turn. Monthly credits do not carry over, and credit packs of 300 for $5 or 600 for $10 never expire. (source, checked )
  • The AI DM features listed include living character sheets that keep HP, XP, inventory, spells and rolls synced, context-aware music, and a Scene Visualizer that generates images from the story. (source, checked )
  • Their FAQ says it runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and that the AI DM narrates in English or Turkish. (source, checked )
  • Their solo page says every adventure works solo, across fantasy, sci-fi, horror, survival, superhero and history settings, and that the AI DM decides when a roll is needed and applies the result. (source, checked )
  • AI battle maps, with player and monster tokens and drawing tools, are part of the DM Copilot toolkit on the Dungeon Master and Hero plans. (source, checked )

What MacerAI does better

  • Supporting a human Dungeon Master. Their copilot toolkit (narration suggestions, NPC dialogue, lore summaries, battle maps and a rules checker) serves a person running a table.
  • Music that changes with the scene.
  • Range of settings today. Their ready-made adventures cover sci-fi, horror, survival, superhero and history as well as fantasy.
  • A free tier that renews every month.

What Rolegend does differently

  • Play with friends or solo. A paid host seats up to 6 players at one table, the host included, and friends on the free plan can join. Each player plays their own character. When everyone is online you can play live, and the table updates every few seconds. When they are not, play async play-by-post and drop in whenever you want. In a fight each player acts on their character's turn, and an email says when the table waits for you. Alone, the paid party holds up to 6 characters that you play yourself, and the Game Master plays the companions who join you on the road; the free plan is a single character. The host picks the language that the Game Master narrates in, its tone and the length of its replies.
  • Keystone Engine is a game engine, built apart from the AI. It handles the dice and the game state. Every roll, modifier, hit point, condition, spell slot and item is settled before ROWAN writes a word, and ROWAN gets on with the story. ROWAN cannot change a number or roll again. When your character acts, the game hands you the die to roll, and Keystone Engine adds the modifiers from your sheet.
  • We implement the System Reference Document 5.1 under CC BY 4.0, with the attribution in full at /legal/attribution.
  • Async play-by-post. You write a turn, the world answers, and you come back tomorrow or next week to pick it up mid-scene.
  • Rolegend's Virtual Tabletop puts a fight on a battle map, with a token for every hero and every enemy, and you drag yours to move. Keystone Engine enforces movement, difficult terrain, cover, line of sight, opportunity attacks, flanking, weapon ranges and light there, and the fog of war hides anything your character cannot see. Every player at the table moves on the same map. Between fights, the map shows the region and the lay of the land in each place. A quick scuffle can also stay in the story, with no map at all.
  • On the paid plan, any Game Master turn can be read aloud, with a narrator voice and a voice of its own for each character who speaks, and you can turn on reading each new reply aloud. One click paints a scene image for a turn or a portrait of your character. You can dictate your own turn on either plan, in a browser with speech recognition (Chrome, Edge and Safari).

Pick MacerAI if

  • You want music that changes with the scene.
  • You run a table yourself and want AI help with narration, NPCs, maps and rules.
  • You want settings beyond fantasy today: sci-fi, horror, survival, superheroes or history.
  • You want a free plan that renews every month, or you want to play in Turkish.

Pick Rolegend if

  • You want to play with friends who drop in whenever they want, or alone at your own pace.
  • You want a game engine, built apart from the AI, to handle the dice and the game state, so a roll is never shaped by the story.
  • You want to see the battle on a Virtual Tabletop, with fog of war that follows what your character can really see.
  • You want to read which rules are enforced before you start a character, published section by section and dated.
