Rolegend and TableForge

Both products keep the numbers in code and let the AI narrate on top. TableForge builds that for a table of up to six, live or async, with voice and a map in every scene; Rolegend builds it for a table of up to 6, live or async, with a Virtual Tabletop, fog of war and a published list of the rules it enforces.

Vaelantir: the timbered inn and walled gate of Karth's Hold on a rocky bluff, torches lit at dusk, with travelers and pack mules at the door. To the left, ivied imperial ruins rise from a misted valley, and a dragon crosses an overcast sky.

What TableForge is

TableForge is an AI Dungeon Master for fifth edition. A programmatic rules engine handles dice, combat, conditions and spell slots, and the AI narrates and runs the NPCs. You can play solo, with a friend or with a group of up to six, in real time or async, on a free plan or one of three monthly subscriptions.

What we could verify

  • Their FAQ says "The AI narrates; the engine adjudicates": a programmatic rules engine handles dice, combat, conditions and spell slots. (source, checked )
  • Their FAQ says dice are rolled by the rules engine with real random number generation, not produced as text by the language model. (source, checked )
  • Their FAQ names the rules source as the SRD 2024 (5e), and the homepage describes the engine as having full SRD 2024 coverage. (source, checked )
  • They support both real-time and async play; in async play the DM waits until everyone has acted before it continues the scene. (source, checked )
  • Campaigns can be played solo, with one friend or with a group of up to six, and every scene gets an auto-generated tactical map with live token positions. (source, checked )
  • The free plan is $0 a month for 60 campaign turns, 1 active campaign and up to 2 players. Only the host subscribes, and guests play free. (source, checked )
  • Paid plans are Hearthfire at $14.99, Fellowship at $29.99 and Legendary at $39.99 a month, with unlimited turns and up to 2, 4 and 6 players. (source, checked )
  • The paid plans include 180, 360 and 600 minutes a month of voice narration, and the homepage lists five selectable DMs and multilingual play. (source, checked )

What TableForge does better

  • Guests play free on the host's plan.
  • A map for every scene. Their tactical map is generated for each scene, so a place that nobody drew still gets a grid.
  • A choice of five DMs, with a monthly allowance of voice narration minutes on each paid plan.
  • A turn allowance with no ceiling: their paid plans list unlimited turns.

What Rolegend does differently

  • Keystone Engine is a game engine, built apart from the AI. It handles the dice and the game state. Every roll, modifier, hit point, condition, spell slot and item is settled before ROWAN writes a word, and ROWAN gets on with the story. ROWAN cannot change a number or roll again. When your character acts, the game hands you the die to roll, and Keystone Engine adds the modifiers from your sheet.
  • Play with friends or solo. A paid host seats up to 6 players at one table, the host included, and friends on the free plan can join. Each player plays their own character. When everyone is online you can play live, and the table updates every few seconds. When they are not, play async play-by-post and drop in whenever you want. In a fight each player acts on their character's turn, and an email says when the table waits for you. Alone, the paid party holds up to 6 characters that you play yourself, and the Game Master plays the companions who join you on the road; the free plan is a single character. The host picks the language that the Game Master narrates in, its tone and the length of its replies.
  • Async play-by-post. Write a turn, come back tomorrow, pick it up mid-scene.
  • Rolegend's Virtual Tabletop puts a fight on a battle map, with a token for every hero and every enemy, and you drag yours to move. Keystone Engine enforces movement, difficult terrain, cover, line of sight, opportunity attacks, flanking, weapon ranges and light there, and the fog of war hides anything your character cannot see. Every player at the table moves on the same map. Between fights, the map shows the region and the lay of the land in each place. A quick scuffle can also stay in the story, with no map at all.
  • On the paid plan, any Game Master turn can be read aloud, with a narrator voice and a voice of its own for each character who speaks, and you can turn on reading each new reply aloud. One click paints a scene image for a turn or a portrait of your character. You can dictate your own turn on either plan, in a browser with speech recognition (Chrome, Edge and Safari).

Pick TableForge if

  • You want guests who do not pay for their own turns.
  • You want a tactical map generated for every scene, wherever the story goes.
  • You want to choose between five DMs.
  • You want unlimited turns for a flat monthly price.

Pick Rolegend if

  • You want to play with friends who drop in whenever they want, or alone at your own pace.
  • You want to see the battle on a Virtual Tabletop, with fog of war that follows what your character can really see.
  • You want to read which rules are enforced before you start a character, published section by section and dated.
  • You want a game engine, built apart from the AI, to handle the dice and the game state, so a roll is never shaped by the story.
