Rolegend and AIDungeonMaster.ai
AIDungeonMaster.ai is the better buy if you want people at the table, a library to pick from, or voices. Rolegend is the narrower product: one player, one ruleset, and a published account of exactly which rules it enforces.

What AIDungeonMaster.ai is
AIDungeonMaster.ai is a purpose-built fifth edition AI Dungeon Master. It runs solo or with up to five invited friends, keeps campaign memory across sessions, gives NPCs distinct voices, and sells access to a marketplace of creator-built adventures. It has a permanently free tier with a daily response cap and two paid tiers either side of Rolegend's single price.
What we could verify
- Its homepage describes "An AI DM that remembers your campaign, voices unique NPCs, and adapts the story to every choice you make." (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- Its features page claims "Full 5e combat with initiative, spells, conditions, and terrain" and persistent memory that "Remembers every NPC, plot twist, and promise across sessions". (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- It is multiplayer: "Play solo or invite up to 5 friends", which is six people in one campaign. (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- It sells a campaign marketplace, described as "Thousands of creator-built adventures across every genre", alongside creator tools. (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- Its free tier is "$0 forever" and includes one active campaign, solo play with no guest players, community campaigns, and a cap of "10 DM responses per day". (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- Standard is $9 per month for up to 3 campaigns, up to 5 guest players, AI campaign, image and video generation, and 500 credits. Pro is $19 per month for up to 5 campaigns, up to 15 guest players and 1200 credits. (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- Its own guide says the platform rolls for you - "No dice (the AI rolls for you)" - and that the AI "handles the rest: dice rolls, skill checks, combat mechanics". Neither that page nor its comparison post, which describes a "purpose-built D&D 5e rules engine", states where the boundary between the language model and that engine sits. (source, checked 2026-07-31)
- It publishes its own category ranking, places itself first, and discloses the conflict in the article: "We built AIDungeonMaster.ai, so we are obviously biased." (source, checked 2026-07-31)
What AIDungeonMaster.ai does better
- Playing with other people. Up to five friends in one campaign on Standard and fifteen on Pro. Rolegend has no shared tables at all, and none planned - if you want anyone else at the table, this comparison is already over.
- Choice of adventure. A marketplace of creator-built campaigns across genres, plus tools to author and publish your own to it. Rolegend ships a small number of campaigns written in-house and has no marketplace.
- Voices. NPCs are given distinct spoken voices. Rolegend is text and only text.
- Pictures and video. Image and video generation are included from $9 per month. Rolegend generates no video, and generates images only when you ask for one from an entity page, never on the free plan.
- The entry price. Standard is $9 against Rolegend's $15, and their free tier has no story boundary on it.
What Rolegend does differently
- Keystone Engine enforces the rules and is the only thing on the platform permitted to change a number. Every die, modifier, hit point, condition and spell slot resolves on the server before any narration exists. ROWAN narrates the world and is handed the result, with no say in it and no way to roll again. That division is the product rather than an implementation detail, which is why it is written down.
- We publish a per-rule coverage table at /rules-coverage: every D&D 5e rule listed as enforced, partly enforced, or left to be narrated. Tactical positioning is in the last column, in public, rather than being discovered in a fight.
- We implement the System Reference Document 5.1 under CC BY 4.0, with the attribution reproduced in full at /legal/attribution.
- Solo only, permanently. One player per campaign. You can run a party of up to six characters and all six are yours.
- Async play-by-post rather than a session. There is no daily cap to run into, because there is no day - write a turn, close the tab, come back next week.
- The free tier is bounded by where it stops in the story, the opening act of one campaign, rather than by a number of replies per day. Which of those is the better deal depends entirely on how you play.
The full account of which fifth edition rules our engine enforces, and which it does not, is at rules coverage.
Pick AIDungeonMaster.ai if
- You want to play with friends. This is the whole decision, and nothing else on this page outweighs it.
- You want a library to choose from, or you want to write adventures for other people to play.
- You want to hear the NPCs rather than read them.
- You want art and video included at the lower price.
- You play in short daily bursts and ten responses a day is genuinely enough, in which case their free tier will outlast ours.
Pick Rolegend if
- You want to know exactly which rules are enforced before you start a character, published section by section and dated.
- You want the die roll to be decided by something that cannot also write the sentence about it, and you want that stated rather than implied.
- You are playing alone on purpose, not because nobody was available.
- You write in long sittings some weeks and not at all in others, and a per-day cap is the wrong shape for that.
- You want the licensing plain: SRD 5.1, CC BY 4.0, attributed on its own page.
