What ChatGPT is

ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that happens to be a superb improviser, which is why so many people have asked it to run a game. It has genuine tools for keeping a long game going: custom instructions, memory, Projects that hold files and instructions together, custom GPTs, and a Python sandbox for anything that needs arithmetic. What it does not have is a component whose job is to say no: the same model writes the description and reports the number.

What ChatGPT does better

Improvisation. ChatGPT is exceptional at inventing a character, a voice or a complication on the spot, and at matching whatever tone you set. Nothing purpose-built writes better prose.
Answering a rules question. Ask it how grappling works, or what your subclass gets at level six, and you get a clear answer in seconds, including for material no single-ruleset tool covers.
Being free, and being there already. It costs nothing to start, it is on your phone, and there is no account to create for a thing you are not sure you want yet.
Every genre and every system. Call of Cthulhu, Blades in the Dark, a homebrew you invented last night, or no system at all. It will run any of them.
Prep. Names, tavern menus, faction motives, a dungeon sketched in five minutes: the parts of running a game that are pure writing.
Actual arithmetic when you ask for it. The Python sandbox will compute a real random number, which is more than a plain chat reply can promise.

What Rolegend does differently

Two systems, not one. Keystone Engine is a game engine, built apart from the AI. It handles the dice and the game state: every roll, modifier, hit point, spell slot, condition and item. ROWAN is handed the result and tells the story. The language model never touches the random number generator and cannot roll again.
The roll exists before the sentence does, so the narration has to live with it. There is no asking again more nicely.
When your character acts, the game hands you the die to roll, and Keystone Engine adds the modifiers from your sheet.
Your character sheet and the world are stored as structured data, not text the model has to remember, so nothing drifts over a long campaign.
World state (plot flags, locations, relationships, inventory) is structured and changes only through a defined tool call, not recalled from the transcript.
Rolegend's Keystone Engine can support any system. Fifth edition is the system it plays today, built from the System Reference Document.
Play with friends or solo. A paid host seats up to 6 players at one table, the host included, and friends on the free plan can join. Each player plays their own character. When everyone is online you can play live, and the table updates every few seconds. When they are not, play async play-by-post and drop in whenever you want. In a fight each player acts on their character's turn, and an email says when the table waits for you. Alone, the paid party holds up to 6 characters that you play yourself, and the Game Master plays the companions who join you on the road; the free plan is a single character. The host picks the language that the Game Master narrates in, its tone and the length of its replies.
Rolegend's Virtual Tabletop puts a fight on a battle map, with a token for every hero and every enemy, and you drag yours to move. Keystone Engine enforces movement, difficult terrain, cover, line of sight, opportunity attacks, flanking, weapon ranges and light there, and the fog of war hides anything your character cannot see. Every player at the table moves on the same map. Between fights, the map shows the region and the lay of the land in each place. A quick scuffle can also stay in the story, with no map at all.
On the paid plan, any Game Master turn can be read aloud, with a narrator voice and a voice of its own for each character who speaks, and you can turn on reading each new reply aloud. One click paints a scene image for a turn or a portrait of your character. You can dictate your own turn on either plan, in a browser with speech recognition (Chrome, Edge and Safari).
Async play-by-post. You write a turn and read what happened, at whatever pace suits you, and your friends do the same.

You want to try this today for nothing. ChatGPT is free, you already have it, and an hour of it will tell you more about whether you enjoy solo play than any comparison page can.
You are running a game rather than playing one, and you want a co-writer for NPCs, names, plots and prep.
Your game is not fifth edition. Any other system, any homebrew, any rules-light setting: ChatGPT will improvise it today.
You want a rules answer more than you want a rules referee. It is a faster index of the books than any character sheet UI.
You would rather keep total control of the fiction. Nothing overrules you, nothing enforces anything, and for a lot of players that is the point.
You are happy to keep the character sheet yourself in a document, and you find the bookkeeping part relaxing rather than tiring.
